Self Care Fridays — Are You on the Verge of Practice Burnout? Look for these Signs…

Burnout is a very real problem, especially for practitioners and those in the helping professions. Being a practitioner usually means operating as a solo service provider and having the entire weight of your success on your shoulders.

And then along comes a shocker like Covid! Life suddenly changes forever. So how can you take care of yourself as you regroup and pivot what you need to pivot to carry on doing what you love with a full heart and a clear mind? How can you keep a balance between this and family responsibilities at home?

Work/Life balance has suddenly got very tough. Even if you’re single, making time for self-care and relaxation along with the new challenges will prove testing. So let’s talk about the signs to look for that indicate you might be headed toward a burnout.

1. Insomnia. If your brain can’t shut down because you’re consumed with work, your sleep pattern will get disrupted, leaving you overtired, lacking energy, and possibly lacking the mental energy to make wise business decisions.

2. Procrastination. Do you cringe at the length of your daily to-do list? Did these tasks once excite you but now they make you want to crawl under a rock? Procrastination leads to missed opportunities to promote the practice so it can have big consequences which in turn leads to more worry.

3. Fatigue. The human body is only capable of handling so much stress on limited sleep. Certainly you’ve heard the phrase “burning the candle at both ends”? That’s what happens when you work yourself to the bone and don’t give your body and brain enough time to recover before starting another high-stress day. At some point your body will want to give up, causing severe fatigue and possibly other illnesses that will keep you away from doing what you need to do.

4. Changes in appetite. For some people, stress causes them to overeat; for others, stress reduces their appetites. Neither extreme is good for your body. For optimal health and mental clarity, remember to take lunch breaks and choose natural, healthy food choices instead of fast food quickies.

5. Anxiety. High stress causes anxiety, which can cause crippling fear or other physical symptoms. Keep in mind: there’s a big difference between the anxiety you feel when stepping out of your comfort zone versus stress-induced anxiety that doesn’t seem to go away.

I know from my own practice and from colleagues that there is a huge amount of stress and anxiety around at the moment and there has never been a more important time to take care of ourselves so that the practice survives, our clients survive, our families survive and we survive in order to thrive again.

Think about this: as a practitioner, if you are not physically able to run your practice, what happens to it? Chances are, you’d have to close your doors and any streams of income you currently have will disappear. Let’s avoid this happening!

Make the commitment to taking care of your whole body, mind, and spirit. Take quiet time to relax. Get outdoors and breathe in some fresh air. Unplug for planned blocks of time such as the weekend. Ask the family for help. Reconnect virtually with old friends. Pick up an old interest and chill a bit with creative outlets. Use a journal to record gratitudes and ideas. Learn the skill of mindfulness. It can be a life saver.

This is a series for coaches and therapists who are passionate about their work and their clients but struggling to find a way to make things work post-Covid as clients melt away and money becomes an issue for most people.

This is a time when most of us are scared. Nothing is known or predictable and many of us are dithering about what to do. In fact, this indecision is paralysing us and that is something that will derail the success of any practice. Therapists and coaches who are successful are people who have learned to do two things.

One is be flexible enough to pivot their business to what will work now — and the other is to break through enough of the fear barriers to get productive again.
