Let’s Just Do It. Tips for Passionate Practitioners and Coaches To Get Their Businesses Back on Track — Tips 13–15: Find a Way to Make Boring Tasks More Enjoyable
This is a series for coaches and therapists who are passionate about their work and their clients but struggling to find a way to make things work post-Covid as clients melt away and money becomes an issue for most people.
This is a time when most of us are scared. nothing is known or predictable and many of us are procrastinating. In fact, it is something we all experience. Trouble is, it’s something that can quickly become a habit. And it’s a habit that will derail your business success with the Practice. Therapists and coaches who are successful are people who have learned to do two things. One is be flexible enough to pivot their business to what will work now — and the other is to break through enough of the fear barriers to get productive again.
Here are three ways to help.
1. Find a Way to Make Boring Tasks More Enjoyable
If you put off doing a task or activity because it’s boring (which is often a reason for procrastinating), but you still need to personally be the one who performs it, look for ways to add a pleasure factor.
For example, if you’re using a treadmill, install a monitor and play beautiful scenes or energizing music while you jog. If you are working on financials, eat chocolates (one every fifteen minutes)!
Adding a fun factor to a task is transformational and can really help ward off the dreaded state of frozen action and non-productivity.
2. Join a Group on Facebook or Similar
It doesn’t have to be a group focusing on procrastination — just on the activity you’re having trouble making yourself do. Or a group where one of the aims is to have the community help one another. Not only will other group members encourage and inspire you, but they’ll also help build your confidence too.
3. Try Working with Your Dog
If you’re lucky enough to have a dog, bring it into your workspace! Dogs can be even more inspirational than people. For example, if you are practicing a speech, practice on your dog. Speak directly to her. Throw her name into your speech a couple of times, and you’ll have a happy, captive audience — and suddenly the speech becomes less stressful and fun.
My dog is marvellous for reminding me to pause very so often and just be with him and the environment for a few minutes. He’s happy because I haven’t pushed him away for interrupting me and my mind and body has had an influx of The Present and cleared the way for fresh focus.
