Let’s Just Do It. Tips for Passionate Practitioners and Coaches To Get Their Businesses Back on Track — Tips 19–21: Eliminate the Disconnect

This is a series for coaches and therapists who are passionate about their work and their clients but struggling to find a way to make things work post-Covid as clients melt away and money becomes an issue for most people.

Procrastination is something we all experience at times. And especially now in this strange, almost-post-covid-but-not-quite time. The trouble is, it’s something that can quickly become a habit. And it’s a habit that will derail the pivoting and changing of your practice to a new way of doing business. Practitionaers who are successful are people who have learned to pivot, adapt and DO.

Here are the last 3 ways to help.

1. Stop Thinking of Yourself

Sometimes we are so busy agonizing about what we have to do to survive or change or keep on track that we don’t stop to consider how not doing it will affect everything! Are we causing a ripple effect that makes other team members or family to pick up the slack for us while we thrash about feeling desperate but doing nothing? Are we going to disappoint someone if our being late with a task or not doing it at all means we have to cancel a much-anticipated launch, or date or special event?

Focusing on what it could mean to others if we hide from doing our part can help propel us forward again. Yes, we may feel guilty but that doesnt have to stop us reaching out for some help and making the first step to complete the job of change and adaptation.

2. Identify the Cause of Resentment

Are you procrastinating out of resentment? It often happens. It is a form of passive resistance — otherwise known as passive aggression! If so, stop right now, think it through, be honest and determine the cause.

o If you are resentful because a client is unpleasant and difficult to work with, fire the client and invite in a better one.

o If your resentment comes because you’d rather be on a beach in Barbados sipping pineapple drinks, realize that is up to you, then start planning to make that happen and give yourself a reason to get your tasks done.

o If you feel that you are “working for peanuts,” raise your prices. Knowing you are receiving fair or even generous compensation is affirming, boosts one’s self-worth and gives more incentive to deliver excellent value.

You can do this and you are worthwhile!

Resentment is often born out of feelings of inequality and powerlessness. Identify the cause, restore the balance, and get moving again.

3. Eliminate the Disconnect

Sometimes people procrastinate because there is a massive disconnect between the task they are facing and the goal they are working toward. Focus on why you need to do the work, what the possible rewards or payoffs will be and what its effect will be on your bank account, relationships, self-respect and on others. In other words find your why — which in these times is often survival! It is certainly a serious time to make those redecisions and get going. You have to take action now. Connect to your need to survive and your desire to Flourish. Make that connect with the task you have on your to-do list and then do it. Any task on the to do list that isnt in alignment with surviving and flourishing can be dropped. It then becomes much easier to stop putting things off that lead you toward your goal.

Procrastination is no friend to those who run their own practices and no one ever succeeded through procrastination. So, make the resolve you are no longer going to be one of those who fall by the wayside. Find out your reasons, throw away guilt or excuses, and start.
